Pediatrics
Pedodontics, or pediatric dentistry; is the branch of dentistry that aims to protect the oral and dental health of children from birth to adolescence, monitor their development, and apply treatment when necessary. Children's dental health affects not only today but also their future dental structure and general health. Therefore, pedodontists lay the foundations for healthy smiles with their child-specific approaches, preventive treatments, and early diagnosis methods.
Pedodontics or Pediatric Dentistry Department is one of the clinical units of Dentistry Faculties, and treatment in faculty clinics is performed by specialist dentists, dentists specializing, and intern dentists under the supervision of professor and associate professor faculty members. Dentists who are pedodontics specialists are dentists who have completed 5 years of Dentistry Faculty and then specialized in the Pediatric Dentistry Department for at least 4 years and submitted a specialization thesis. The aim of Pediatric Dentistry treatment is to protect the oral and dental health of children from birth to the end of adolescence and to perform necessary diagnosis and treatment. Pedodontics pediatric dentistry is the only department that applies age-specific treatment in dentistry, and since they also take courses on child psychology, anatomy, and development during their education, they act somewhat like pediatricians.
Tooth loss can also occur in children during the baby teeth period. This can be due to bottle caries or constant pacifier sucking. In addition, if the mother has cavities in her mouth, the cavity-causing bacteria can be transmitted to the child by the mother putting the breast in her mouth and giving it. Also, many problems can be encountered during the transition from baby teeth to permanent teeth. From the newborn period until the age of 18, the pedodontics pediatric dentist will deal with the solution of your child's intraoral soft tissue and all kinds of dental problems. While dental check-ups in children without baby teeth are more about jaw structure and future problems, after baby teeth erupt, it is more about dental health. In children in this age range, treatment of cavities in baby teeth and permanent teeth, tooth extraction before orthodontic treatment or in impacted teeth, preventive orthodontic treatment, fractures resulting from trauma in teeth, dental bacterial plaque and tartar cleanings, oral and dental health education, fluoride applications, coating tooth surfaces with cavity-protective materials in children whose teeth decay very easily, and treatment of teething disorders are within the scope of the pediatric dentist. Additionally, the pedodontist dentist performs various prosthesis and appliance applications to prevent gaps formed by early tooth extractions from harming the alignment of other teeth and jaw structure.
Besides, some immune system disorders and systemic diseases can cause tooth deficiencies or absence of teeth in children. In this case, child prosthesis application should be performed. However, children's dental prostheses differ from adult prostheses. Because prosthesis application should be done considering children's nutrition, active lives, and psychology. Especially in children in the development age, special prostheses for children are prepared by the pediatric dentist so that development is not affected due to nutrition. From the parents' perspective, it should be noted that these prostheses need to be constantly rearranged according to the changing jaw measurements with the child's age. Therefore, it is important that children's prostheses are made by pediatric dentists who also know the anatomical structure of children very well.
Dental treatments and operations for children with coordination problems, hyperactive, overly anxious, or disabled children can be performed under general anesthesia. In this case, an anesthesiologist will accompany the pediatric dentist. The offices of pediatric dentists or the clinics of hospitals related to this department are specially designed to be much more fun so that children can go to dentists without fear. Therefore, the approach of a normal dentist to your child will be different from that of a pediatric dentist. Also, pedodontist dentists are people who specialize in preventive dental treatment rather than cavity treatment and tooth extraction. Therefore, they are the people who will explain all the necessary information to you and your child to protect your child's dental health.
