Orthodontics

Orthodontics is a dental specialty dealing with the diagnosis and treatment of disorders in tooth and jaw structure. Orthodontic treatment, preferred due to crooked teeth, jaw incompatibilities or aesthetic concerns, aims to achieve both a healthy oral structure and a more aesthetic smile. Thanks to advanced orthodontic methods, personalized solutions can be offered to every age group from childhood to adulthood.

Why Do Orthodontic Problems Occur and How Are They Treated ?

For disorders such as the lower jaw being forward or backward, the treatment method is decided considering the patient's age. If the patient is in adolescence and there is a situation where the lower-upper jaw structure is backward, treatment with orthodontic techniques is possible. If the patient is an adult, treatment of skeletal disorders is carried out with cooperation between orthodontics and surgery. Due to functional disorders, for example; jaw incompatibility may be observed in cases such as mouth breathing. In a person who breathes through the mouth, the upper part of the jaw will remain narrow and will be in V form.

Situations that should not be done and have become habits, such as prolonged use of bottles and pacifiers, thumb sucking, nail biting, can cause orthodontic disorders. These habits should be treated as early as possible.

Preventing these habits at an early age is important for the completion of skeletal development.

Situations such as the tongue being larger than it should be in terms of structure, and the presence of extracted tooth gaps also cause spacing in teeth. If the jaw structure to which the teeth are attached is small and the teeth are large; teeth do not fit in the jaw and crowding occurs.

Early or late baby tooth loss can also cause crooked teeth. The permanent tooth existing in the mouth moves into this gap instead of baby teeth that fall out prematurely. Since the teeth that should emerge from there cannot find space for themselves, crowding occurs.

How Necessary is Orthodontic Treatment ?

Orthodontic treatment does not only carry aesthetic concerns, but aims to prevent possible future gum diseases, prevent problems in the jaw joint, ensure chewing functionality and eliminate this problem in individuals with speech disorders.

Depending on the existing orthodontic problem in the mouth, treatment methods can be determined with removable appliances, functional appliances and fixed appliances. Simple orthodontic problems that are not in advanced stages can be solved with elastic removable appliances that the patient can wear and remove.

After the completion of primary orthodontic treatments, it is very important not to neglect retention treatments to prevent the treatments from regressing and deteriorating. Different appliances that work passively can be used for this period.

The orthodontics branch works in constant cooperation with other sub-branches of dentistry.
