Toothache
Food residues on and between the aching tooth should be cleaned using a toothbrush and dental floss, and the mouth should be thoroughly rinsed with salt water obtained by adding half a teaspoon of salt to half a glass of water.
Absolutely no ASPIRIN or any painkiller should be applied to the aching tooth. Due to their chemical structures, such medications can cause irritation in the gums and surrounding soft tissues. This will cause a second pain in addition to the toothache. If swelling has occurred on the face due to inflammation, a cold compress should be applied to that area. A dentist should be consulted as soon as possible. After oral and dental examination, the dentist may apply one of the treatment options such as Treatment (Filling), Root Canal Treatment, Tooth Extraction.
Tooth Extraction
Tooth extraction is the process of removing the tooth from its socket in the bone. Extraction is performed under local anesthesia. The tooth is held with an instrument and first loosened by making back-and-forth movements. These movements can sometimes be done with an instrument inserted between the tooth and gums. Thus, the tooth is extracted with minimal trauma.
What should be done before extraction?
If there is a medication prescribed by your doctor (for example, antibiotics), you must use it regularly, paying attention to the times. If you have any illness or allergy and therefore have medications you use regularly, you must definitely inform your doctor. Aspirin-type medications that delay clotting should not be used before extraction. If possible, teeth should be brushed well and rinsed with antiseptic water. This helps reduce bacteria in the mouth and lower the risk of infection.
What should be paid attention to after tooth extraction?
- The tampon placed on the extraction wound should be kept for about half an hour. After this tampon is removed, no new tampon should be placed unless necessary, and care should be taken not to disrupt the formed clot.
- The mouth should not be rinsed with water.
- Nothing should be eaten for about two hours after extraction, and after this period, warm things should be preferred and very hot or cold foods should be avoided.
- No smoking for 24 hours. Smoking can cause the clot to break down and the wound area to become inflamed. This situation called dry socket causes pain for a long time.
- No alcohol for 24 hours.
- Do not touch the extraction site in any way, and do not suck or spit the wound area.
- The wounded area should not be used for 24 hours.
- If there is pain, a medication other than aspirin should be preferred, and if possible, consult a doctor for this.
- The extraction site must be kept clean.
- Food residue entering the wound should be prevented. 24 hours after extraction, the area should be brushed slowly with a soft toothbrush. Warm salt water gargle can also be used during this time.
What is Root Canal Treatment ?
Teeth structure contains blood vessels and nerves. These structures provide nutrition to the teeth and serve as warning signals in advanced cases when decay occurs. When decay progresses and reaches the pulp, which is the nerve tissue called the core of the tooth, it begins to destroy it and causes severe pain and eventually leads to the death of the tooth. Harmful microbes at the root of the tooth exit from the root tip and spread to the jawbone, causing a condition called abscess. The inflammation formed in the jawbone causes tooth loss and destruction of surrounding tissues. The treatment done to save the tooth in this situation is called root canal treatment.
How is Root Canal Treatment Done ?
Root canal treatment is done by removing the diseased pulp (nerve). After the pulp tissue is completely cleaned from the tooth root, a series of procedures are applied to clean the root canals from bacteria and debris. After the canals are cleaned and completely disinfected, they are completely filled up to the root tip with special materials.
Procedures in Root Canal Treatment
- The tooth surface is opened and decay is completely cleaned
- Pulp tissue and debris are completely removed.
- Root canals are cleaned and widened with special instruments.
- After root canals are disinfected, they are completely filled.
- Root canal treatment is completed. Depending on the condition of the tooth, the tooth is restored to its former form with filling or crown. Your tooth is now dead but can continue its function.
Filling Treatment
Filling is the restoration of the cavity that appears after all decay and debris in a decayed tooth are cleaned, with a material that has been proven to last for a long time without causing problems in the mouth and suitable for the normal form of that tooth. Filling is a method to restore a tooth damaged by decay to its normal function and appearance. When your dentist fills your tooth, they first remove the decayed tooth tissue. They clean the affected area and fill the cavity with filling material. They try to prevent the progression of decay by closing the cavities where bacteria can enter with filling. Materials used for fillings include gold, porcelain, composite resin (tooth-colored filling) and amalgam (mercury, silver, copper, tin and sometimes zinc alloy).
Composite Filling
Composite fillings are placed in prepared cavities layer by layer and each layer is hardened with a special light. When this process is completed, composite fillings are shaped and adjusted according to the tooth. All these procedures take longer than amalgam filling procedures. But they are more aesthetic.
Amalgam Filling
Amalgam fillings are also described as silver fillings. Amalgam is obtained by mixing silver, tin and copper alloy with mercury. Mercury, which makes up 45-50% of the mixture, binds the metals together to create a durable filling material. Amalgam fillings, which have been developed and used for over 150 years, have served to preserve many teeth and keep them in the mouth.
Dental Calculus
Dental calculus is hard, mineralized structures formed as a result of long-term accumulation of food residues (dental plaque) around the teeth. Approximately 90% of adults have dental calculus. Calculus creates the biggest problem especially when it forms below the gum line. Calculus is calcified and hard; cleaning it is difficult. Regular dental check-ups include cleaning your teeth and calculus. This cleaning procedure is done by scraping the tooth with instruments called scalers and curettes, especially for calculus below the gum line. The procedure is uncomfortable and makes your gums bleed. Another method is to use a vibrating instrument that helps clean calculus. Toothpastes have been found to reduce calculus buildup on teeth above the gums, but have little or no effect on calculus below the gum line. Unfortunately, it is the calculus formed under the gums (tartar) that leads to periodontitis, a gum disease that can result in tooth loss. Tartar control toothpastes may have an effect on aesthetic appearance and may help your teeth be cleaned better when you visit your dentist, but their benefit in preventing the formation of real, harmful calculus is very limited. Additionally, there are special toothpastes designed to clean stains caused by smoking. We do not recommend these toothpastes: People whose gums have already receded may be harmed by such toothpastes that will expose the softer layers under the gum line.
